Former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke to Fortune magazine today about the 2008 presidential elections and whether he would run in them.
“You still don’t get it, do you?” he asks.
The radical realist who defied conventional wisdom 12 years ago by stealing the House out from under the noses of entrenched Democrats now plans a surprise attack for the presidency. “I’m going to tell you something, and whether or not it’s plausible given the world you come out of is your problem,” he tells Fortune. “I am not ‘running’ for president. I am seeking to create a movement to win the future by offering a series of solutions so compelling that if the American people say I have to be president, it will happen.” So he’s running, only without yet formally saying so.

Almost two years before the American people will be able to elect a new president, the presidential race has slowly but surely started. History teaches us that most serious candidates will announce their intentions in early 2007 to give them ample time for fundraising before the all-important Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary in January 2008.
For now it is seems like the ‘ones to beat’ in the upcoming primaries will be Rudy Giuliani and John McCain for the Republicans, while the Democratic nomination will probably be fought out between Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John Edwards and Barack Obama, with Clinton as the clear front-runner. But what do we know? Most mainstream media made Howard Dean out to be the favorite in 2004 and look what happened there.

After Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona surprised absolutely nobody by forming a presidential exploratory committee last Sunday, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani followed suit by anouncing he had formed his own exploratory committee earlier today.
These two men have, together with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, been named the top-3 likely candidates for the Republican Party by pundits for years. Rice, however, has stated on numerous occasions that she has no intention of running for the presidency.

Riding on Democratic euphoria, Democratic governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa today announced a presidential bid for the 2008 presidential elections, becoming the first Democrat to officially do so.
In a statement, the Roman Catholic, two-term governor of Iowa said that “Americans sent a clear message on Tuesday. They want leaders who will take this country in a new direction” and that “They want leaders who share their values, understand their needs, and respect their intelligence. That’s what I’ve done as governor of Iowa, and that’s what I intend to do as president.”
And so another election draws to a close in the manner we’ve come to expect: the counting of votes dragging on beyond election night with a few thousand votes separating two flawed candidates in a single state. Our electoral system surely works in mysterious ways that on occasion it seems to thrust the future direction of the nation on the shoulders of a handful of voters. Still, after the smoke has cleared, one thing has become obvious: the Democrats have regained control of Capitol Hill.
