The IAEA found trace amounts of plutonium and enriched uranium in an Iranian waste facility today.
Well now, Mr. Ahmadinejad, how are you going to spin that one? If all that Iran wants is ‘peaceful nuclear energy’, why does it need plutonium? Are you still going to deny that as I’m writing this you’re building a heavy water research reactor in Arak to produce the plutonium you’d need to rain destruction on, oh I don’t know, Israel? For the time being, the Iranian President has been busy continuing his act as a friendly neighborhood dictator who simply wants cheaper energy for all his citizens.
Earlier today, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country expects its nuclear program to be fully operational by February and claimed that the international community was ready to accept Iran as a nuclear state according to Iran’s national news service IRNA. “This year’s Ten-Day Dawn period will mark the Iranian nation’s success in mastering fuel cycle as well as its achievements in other fields,” the president said, referring to the festivities marking Iran’s victory in the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
He also stated that Iran is willing to have a “dialogue” with the United States, but only if the U.S. adopts a more respectful attitude. “If they fix their behavior toward us, we will have a dialogue with them because that’s a principle of our foreign policy. But you know, they have their own way of thinking. They really think they own the world, they always sort of look down upon you,” the Iranian president said.
In fact, Ahmadinejad said that his country desires improved relations with every country in the international community. Well, almost every country. “We are after positive interaction with the whole world, except a state which we consider its foundation as wrong and do not attach any value to its legitimacy,” he said, quite possibly referring to Israel.
Finally, the Iranian President also said today that he is preparing a message to the American people. “The message is in the stage of preparation,” he said. Without elaborating, he said his message would be in response to U.S. government statements.
Honestly, does Ahmadinejad really think he’s fooling anyone? Pursuing nuclear power so aggressively while adopting a very bellicose rhetoric? To his own people, he speaks of the Day of Judgment and calmly speaks of wishing the destruction of the State of Israel, a fellow member of the United Nations. If all he wanted was cheap energy, why wouldn’t he have accepted one of the very generous offers given by the EU and Russia to give him a reactor for free, at the cost of the European tax-payers? I really want to believe that Iran is sincere, but they’re just not behaving like a country that just wants peaceful nuclear energy.
And so now the IAEA has found plutonium. Let me just recline on my armchair, grab a cold one and make some popcorn while I wait for Ahmadinejad’s answer to this one. I have many things against the man, but he’s one heck of a great public speaker and spin doctor. Still, I’m hoping against hope that some of the European leaders might take this opportunity to take their heads out of the sand and wake up.
But please, Mr. Ahmadinejad, go ahead: tell me more about this peaceful plutonium of yours
