Control of the US Senate has now officially become a nailbiter with CNN and Fox calling the Montana Senate race for Democrat Jon Tester, edging out Republican incumbent Conrad Burns by about 2800 votes with all but 1 precinct reporting.
What this effectively means is that control of the US Senate now rests on the Virginia Senate race between Republican incumbent George Allen and Democratic challenger Jim Webb. The last update had Allen trailing Webb by about 7800 votes with Allen likely to call for a recount.
It’s not looking good for the GOP. Personally, I hadn’t expected Burns to win re-election in Montana, but I had high hopes for Jim Talent of Missouri and George Allen. 7800 votes isn’t much, but I don’t see Allen compensating for them in a recount. Well, Republicans, it’s been fun these last 14 years, now the ball is in the Democrats’ court. You now have 2 years to prove to us that you were right all along and that what this country needs is a new, Democratic direction. The best of luck to y’all, I’m not easily convinced.
